John A. Scott, III, son of John A., II and Gussie Pike Scott, was born August 17, 1926, in Yell County, Arkansas. He was baptized on September 30, 1926, in Arkansas and confirmed March 17, 1960 at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner by Rev. John Mohr. He attended Arkansas Tech in Russellville and the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville where he received his B.S. He later did graduate work at Oklahoma A&M University which is now Oklahoma State University. John served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and Korea.
On January 1, 1948, he was united in marriage with Anna M. Cinger at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Dardenelle, Arkansas. John began his long career as a Vocational Agriculture instructor in Hector, Arkansas. He would then teach in Elk Horn, Coon Rapids, and Plymouth, Iowa before moving to Sumner in 1957. He remained at the Sumner Schools until retiring in 1990.
John’s death occurred at the University Hospitals in Iowa City on Tuesday, March 13, 2012. He was eighty-five years old and had been a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner. He was also a member of the Thomas E. Woods Post #223, American Legion where he served many years as adjutant, and was a board member and past president of the Iowa Vocational Agriculture Teacher’s Association.
He is survived by eight daughters, Carol Feller of Bellevue, Karen (Frank) Smith of Bloomfield, New Mexico, Dianne Fuller of Springville, Joyce (Ron) Bast of Aplington, Sharon (Brett) Long of Racine, Wisconsin, Lynn Scott of Sumner, Ann (Steve) Cutshall of Allison, and Alice Scott of Sumner; nine grandchildren, Kerensa (Pat) Kettmann, Zebulon Strickler, Cyndel Bast, Amber and John Long, Alexander, Rubanna, Maryann, and John Cutshall; one great granddaughter, Bindi Kettmann; and three nieces, Tommie Nell Darst, Becca Jane Roden, and Leda Simms.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Anna, who died August 17, 1998; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann Cutshall; his parents; two brothers,; five sisters; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 17, 2012, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner with Rev. William Runaas, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at St. John Lutheran Cemetery with military rites by Thomas E. Woods Post #223, American Legion of Sumner. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, March 16, 2012, at St John Lutheran Church and for one hour preceding services at the church on Saturday. Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner is in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made in his name to the American Diabetes Association or the Iowa FFA Foundation.
